Solo Exhibition | When Water Runs Dry

My latest solo exhibition When Water Runs Dry was held at the National Gallery of North Macedonia – Cifte Hamam from October 16 to November 11, 2025. Curated by Ana Frangovska, the exhibition marks 20 years of my art practice.

"Water serves as the central metaphor and narrative thread throughout the exhibition, symbolizing life and renewal, as well as disappearance, memory, and loss. The artworks raise questions about architectural heritage, urban transformation, collective memory, and the ecology of space, intertwining personal narratives with broader social contexts", writes Frangovska.

Through collaboration with multiple schools, universities, embassies and museums, we engaged a diverse audience with the exhibition. Tours and workshops were given in Macedonian, Albanian, English and sign language by the museum educators, curator Frangovska and me. Children were especially welcome to explore and imagine the space using a special children's exhibition guide. This approach fostered new meanings and opportunities for further cooperation, resistance and hope.

As Frangovska concludes, “When water runs dry, it shall not leave behind a desert, but rather a new fluid composed of voices, archives, phantom bodies, and unrelenting visions.”

Workshop | The Listening Academy Skopje

From March 13 to 16, 2025, The Listening Academy took place in Skopje at the Cultural Centre Jadro and the Museum of Contemporary Art. This edition focused on "crip listening”, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities. It featured contributions from Brandon LaBelle, Maja Zeco, Sofia Gridoriadu, Bojana Janeva, Nikola Uzunovski, and me.

You can read my conversation with Brandon LaBelle, the director of The Listening Biennial and The Listening Academy, where we discuss the Academy, the need to rethink institutional practices, and where my research and art projects are headed next.

Platform | Secondary Archive

My work is featured on Secondary Archive, the largest platform for artists identifying as women from Central and Eastern Europe. Supported by the Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation, it showcases selections from artists across the region. The selection for North Macedonia was curated by Ivana Vaseva and includes 24 artists from various generations and genres. It is the largest selection of this kind, highlighting the significant role of women in shaping the Macedonian art scene.

You can read my personal contribution to the archive, which reflects my journey as an artist as I navigate emigration, motherhood, and the transition into research.

Kind regards and happy holidays,

Verica Kovacevska
