THE WAITING ROOM
Performance, 5 hours / Installation, 2001
In The Waiting Room a number of high school students were asked to participate in an artwork. Without being given any information about the work’s content, they were asked to stay inside a room in the high school basement and wait for the cameraman.
Unaware that they have become a part of a performance, the students spent five hours waiting inside the basement room.
The work examined the process of waiting and the psychology of the people while waiting.
The piece was documented with photographs, which following the performance were placed inside the waiting room (above the chairs) in order to show the behaviour of the students while waiting and to recreate the atmosphere of emptiness and monotony often found in waiting rooms.
