The Circle (2003), public actions (20min-4h)
Exeter, London, Edinburgh, Great Britain

The Circle was a series of performances carried out in three different locations within each of three GB cities - London, Exeter, and Edinburgh.

In each of the performances, the artist drew and stood in a circle whilst being in different public location such as a shopping street, bus station, Chinese quarter, parliament house, graveyard, or a park.

The piece was documented with photographs, which showed the artist standing still in these places, sometimes blending in with the surrounding and sometimes sticking out and even becoming the main attraction.

The piece explored basic human notions of (self-) alienation and integration, and raised questions about the existence of personal space within public surroundings.
