Studio No. 4 (2008), site-specific installation
Cambridge, United Kingdom
Studio No. 4 is a large-scale installation specifically designed for the art studio where the artist spent nine months as part of her art residency in Christ’s College Visual Art Centre, in Cambridge, UK.
In Studio No. 4, a plethora of words crawled all over the studio walls, emerging from room details (e.g. electric sockets, pipes) and then disappearing into other ones (e.g. holes, nails, the fire alarm). On their way they left large organic shapes, transforming the studio into a personal space that reflected the artist’s thoughts, hopes, dreams and memories.
Each of the letters used suggested a different chapter of the artist’s life: Birth, Mother/Macedonia, Daddy/Damage, Abuse, Sex, Problems, Love/Life and Hope, creating a whole cycle almost like an autobiographical novel. Each of the words (as well as their size, combination and context) was meticulously chosen and later performed by the artist in the accompanying sound of the installation.
