I Must Be (2003), video performance (8min 59sec)
Exeter, Great Britain

I Must Be is a series of four video performances that start with simple actions and rapidly descend into a chaotic world of gestures and language where behavior spins out of control.

The piece portrays people’s obsessive endeavor to fit into certain situations, environments and/or society, and at the same time shows the ineffectiveness of forcing such actions and becoming something one is not.

Shot in a single, unedited take, I Must Be is an absurd parody of the human desire to please others, and ultimately oneself, by denying one’s identity, needs, and emotions.

I Must Be is part of the Forced Actions series of video performances.
