Forced Actions (2003-2004, 2010-2011), video performances / installation
Exeter, Great Britain; Zurich, Switzerland; Skopje, Macedonia
Forced Actions is a series of seven short video performances. The videos portray the artist performing simple repetitive actions in front of the camera, while sometimes repeating mantras such as “I must be clean”, “I must be beautiful”, or “I must be happy”.
Each video within the series was filmed in a different living room which the artist occupied whilst living in England and then in Switzerland. Thus, most of the topics explored in the Forced Actions refer to the artist`s desires, private obsessions and the challenges of integrating into a new society.
The project as a whole was presented in 2011/2012 by re-creating a living room in the National Gallery of Macedonia. The Forced Actions videos were displayed together with specific elements used in the video performances as well as with many personal items. The audience was invited to inspect these items and to watch the videos in a seemingly relaxed atmosphere.
